The Simple Things In Life
The responsibility to work is as important is the responsibility to play. You just know you’re doing too much of the former, when you constantly have to turn down your friends’ invitations to that birthday parties or gatherings, all in the almighty name of work. Of course, no one is asking you to become an irresponsible prick, walk off the job, and leave your colleagues to drown. It’s just that a balance needs to be maintained, as much for your personal well-being as for that of those around you.
Still chasing that grade, paper qualification, or promotion? Fine, you do owe it to yourself (everyone does) to be the best/all that you can become, and to your colleagues to not let them down. But shouldn’t you also chase, or rather, embrace life? As bad as it is to “f*** care work lah”, isn’t it as grievous a sin to take life for granted?
Granted, I’m not exactly free of guilt. Being in the final year of my tertiary education and a co-editor of a
school ezine hasn’t exactly enriched my social life so to speak. I’ve had to sacrifice a lot of my own time to tend to my studies and clients. At that time, I’d thought it was a good thing. That was until a good friend of mine (you know who you are) came up to me one day and smacked my head around a bit (ouch) to remind me to play as well.
So after much deliberation… what are you still doing in front of the computer? Relive your childhood and enjoy the simple things in life. Go out with friends, bunk over at someone’s place, have a slumber party, it’s much easier now since you don’t have to beg or barter with your parents for their permission like you used to. Do something different, try new things, and don’t let those “That’s just childish/corny/immature/lame/stupid,” comments get to you. You’ll be surprised how much fun it is. Or better still, don’t do anything in particular, just bask in the company of your friends and relax. Yes, you don’t always have to fill your life with activity.
As for me, I shall stop typing what you all already know and make up all the time I ever lost on work (and the excuse of it). I need to reacquaint myself with friends who’ve flown off to study abroad, friends who’ve flown back for holidays, and lastly, friends/collagues who I’ve hardly spend time with outside work. So if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got some “play” to do.
